The Right Packing Supplies for a Safe & Organised Move

One of the biggest mistakes people make when moving is underestimating the importance of proper packing supplies. The right materials don’t just make packing easier — they protect your belongings, keep your move organised and reduce the risk of damage.

If you’re preparing for a move in the South West, here’s what you need to know about choosing the right packing supplies.

1. Use Proper Moving Boxes (Not Random Cartons)

It can be tempting to collect supermarket boxes, but not all boxes are built to carry the weight of household items.

We recommend:

  • Small boxes for books, pantry items and heavier objects

  • Medium boxes for kitchenware, toys and general household items

  • Large boxes for linen, clothing and lighter bulky items

  • Heavy-duty or double-walled boxes for fragile or valuable items

Using the correct box size prevents overpacking and reduces strain on the bottom of the box.

2. Loose Items Should Go in Boxes

Where possible, avoid leaving items loose. Small, loose belongings are more likely to be misplaced or damaged during transport.

Items such as:

  • Shoes

  • Cables and electronics accessories

  • Toys

  • Kitchen utensils

  • Décor pieces

Should always be packed securely into labelled boxes. This keeps everything contained, organised and easier to unload at your new home.

3. Protective Materials Matter

Quality packing materials help absorb movement and prevent breakage.

Essential supplies include:

  • Packing paper or butcher’s paper

  • Bubble wrap for fragile items

  • Packing tape (strong, high-quality tape is best)

  • Furniture blankets or padding

  • Stretch wrap for securing drawers and protecting surfaces

Filling empty gaps inside boxes is just as important as wrapping the items themselves. If items can move, they can break.

4. Don’t Overfill Boxes

Overloaded boxes are harder to carry and more likely to split. Keep weight manageable, especially for heavier items like books or kitchenware. Smaller boxes are often safer for dense items.

5. Label Clearly & Stay Organised

Clear labelling saves time on moving day and when unpacking.

Each box should include:

  • The room it belongs to

  • A brief description of contents

  • “Fragile” if required

Organisation at this stage makes settling into your new home far smoother.
