How to Pack Fragile Items for a Safe Move

Moving house is exciting, but packing delicate items can feel stressful. Glassware, ceramics, artwork and sentimental pieces all need extra care to make sure they arrive safely. The good news? With the right approach (and the right materials), you can significantly reduce the risk of damage during your move.

Here’s a practical guide to packing fragile items properly.

1. Start with the Right Packing Materials

Quality materials make all the difference. Before you begin, gather:

  • Sturdy moving boxes (preferably double-walled for heavy or delicate items)

  • Butcher’s paper or packing paper

  • Bubble wrap

  • Packing tape

  • Permanent marker for labelling

  • Towels, linen or soft clothing (great as extra padding)

Avoid using newspaper directly on delicate items, as the ink can transfer.

2. Wrap Each Item Individually

Never stack fragile items without wrapping them first.

For glassware and cups:

  • Stuff the inside with packing paper.

  • Wrap the entire piece in paper, then add a layer of bubble wrap.

  • Secure lightly with tape if needed.

For plates and bowls:

  • Wrap each plate separately.

  • Stack them vertically in the box (like records), not flat — this reduces pressure and breakage.

For vases and decorative items:

  • Wrap carefully with multiple layers.

  • Pay attention to handles and thin sections.

The key rule: if it can move inside the box, it can break.

3. Cushion the Bottom and Fill Gaps

Before placing anything in a box:

  • Add a thick layer of crumpled paper or soft padding to the bottom.

  • Place heavier items at the base.

  • Fill all empty spaces with paper, linen or bubble wrap so nothing shifts during transport.

Give the box a gentle shake. If you feel movement, add more padding.

4. Don’t Overpack

It’s tempting to fill every box to the brim, but fragile boxes should not be too heavy. Smaller boxes are often better for delicate items, as they’re easier to carry and less likely to collapse under weight.

5. Clearly Label Every Fragile Box

Mark boxes clearly with:

  • “FRAGILE”

  • “THIS SIDE UP”

  • A brief note of contents (e.g. “Kitchen – Glassware”)

Clear labelling helps ensure your removal team handles these boxes with extra care.

Final Tip

Start early and pack fragile items methodically rather than rushing at the last minute. A calm, organised approach greatly reduces damage and stress on moving day.
